Loren and Jason put together a simple celebration. They built their schedule around their guests . . . it was more about making family and friends comfortable and enjoying themselves than impressing others. They were not held by tradition or trends to create a gala event that’s about the image you project – or the impression you make. Instead, they prefer images showing them as they are: down to earth, authentic, happy and in love.

That’s not unusual for this couple to break with the norm. You’re more likely to see Jason cook an exotic meal while Loren builds a hut!

It was a beautiful sunset ceremony at the Cambridge Mill.   The warm, setting rays of the sun were beaming in as Loren came to meet and marry Jason.

. . . and the words I dearly love to hear: Jay, just do your thing – we trust you completely. We’re interested in the real photos, not the posed cliches.

Sarah at the Cambridge Mill was remarkable!   Organizing, timing everything and coming to the rescue over and over again, all with a great, calm, friendly attitude:

A great big thank you to this wonderful family – who came in before their fall family portraits to do some Harry Potter photos and kick start my halloween costumed portraits!   I really wouldn’t have started this year without a push from you guys!

So where do all these serious, wizardly looks come from?   When you’re relaxed and having fun and doing something interesting – your ability to convey any kind of feel –>  serious, fun, excited, loving, soulful, natural – is remarkable!   This applies equally to children and adults.   Here’s what it usually looks like in between scenes:

Julie and Steve, you have the most wonderful, beautiful children – inside and out.    Smart.   Funny.    Talented.    Interested        . . . and when I see how friendly and caring they are with each other – I feel joyful.    I see your interactions with them – close individual attention – listening intently to them – treating them with the same respect and individuality that is often reserved for adults only – I deeply admire the talent, care and love you put into these people.

. . . and a wonderful message I received from this family the day after their session:

Skyping the wedding across the Atlantic!

. . .   they met at school in the UK . . . and started a relationship when Stephen lived in the UK and Holly lived in Canada – the skype relationship ends – together at last!!

THINK  Deeply.   SPEAK  Gently.   LOVE  Much.   LAUGH  A  Lot.   WORK  Hard.   GIVE  Freely.   And  Be  KIND.
It really shows in these photos that these words are how you live your life.

He has a depth to him that caught Niki’s eye (and several others at camp!).    Remarkably loyal.   An active, interested mind.   A strong appreciation of others.    That was 9 years ago.

Niki got what she wanted  . . . and so did Farnoud.   It’s been that way for a long time  -  individually and in their lives together  -  Farnoud and Niki have been unusually lucky.   Things just fall into place for them when and how they want it.

What makes them so lucky?
I see several things:
They do what matters most to them;  the things they respond to with deep feeling.   Doing what you’re passionate about unlocks all kinds of energy and resourcefulness.
They’re friendly and caring.   People respond to this in amazing ways.   . . . and you feel great about yourself.
They’re relaxed and joyful.   They have fun at all kinds of things.   Even difficult things.   They’re laughing often.   That changes the way you view the world and the way the world views you.

. . . and these attitudes add up to a lucky, almost magical experience of life with wonderful surprises happening all the time.   Niki and Farnoud, I know you’ll continue having a remarkable life together.    Cheers!

I’m usually photographing the wedding; not a guest.   Here’s my 1st family wedding, where I get to do both.

My niece Rachael found this really cool guy with a good heart . . .  and he’s been part of our family for a long time now before being made official on their wedding day.

I find myself looking through these photos and being moved to bouts of laughter and happiness.   Seeing their connection and how genuinely happy they are being together feels great.

Dustin and Rachael are this great mix of confidence, wit and playful intelligence  . . . so they’re cool (yeah, it’s falling out of their pockets).  They’re also inclusive;  they notice other people and they’re warm and friendly – which makes them really stand out as cool people.   Here’s the photos of their beautiful wedding at Rockwood Conservation area:
