My fellow photographer Zelia came out with her boys for family portraits.    She’s always up for trying anything.  Jakob Markus and Mathew were a riot!  This kind of session is all about fun.  I haven’t seen these guys since the winter and it was so cool to be talking with Mathew  ….. cuz now he talks back!

These will be character portraits with your child’s prized possession in my pure white studio set:

- the blanket you need to sneak into the laundry

- the hat they would wear everywhere if they could

This mini white session (20 – 30 minutes) is all about capturing clean, fresh, timeless portraits that will be a great memory of this age in their life.

So much of my work is about observing people and I get a real charge out of watching a family where the children are obviously comfortable, safe and confident in their own space.  I know a lot of work and thought go into creating a home life like that for kids and I always admire it.  Here are Julie, Jean-Francois, Anne-Sophie and Étienne.

They were fabulous with the kids, averting 3 or 4 meltdowns with a natural talent, redirecting them to fun activities, distracting them and occasionally, offering a short term bribe.  They kept it very positive and fun for the children.

It turned dark and windy out for our session, so we couldn’t have outdoor pictures and no window light pictures.    …. so we had a location studio shoot!  The joking and banter was continuous, fun and easy going.  When we were finished, the weather was good enough to go outside after all.

I feel my own emotions being tugged as I watch this family being together and we talk about life, parenting philosophy, motivation, travel, wine, work and enjoyment.

After studying and working in human development for years, I expect Rebecca would have a sophisticated understanding and knowledge of attitudes, motivation, learning and emotional openness.  What I see is not just an awareness or knowledge though.  They are actually living it.  They are a close, connected family and they’re happy together.  Alain and Rebecca radiate their pride in Maya.  Things take 2nd or 3rd place to relationships here.

If you start life as someone special – and you’re surrounded with love, wisdom and a deep, abiding belief that you are a wonderful creature – where does that lead?  .  … I am so looking forward to seeing where it leads Maya.  Early bets in my book are on Maya developing a sense of easy self-assurance –> something I admire in both Alain and Rebecca.

Her relaxed, easy going attitude convinced me that she wouldn’t need any coaching to realize that we would get more natural, unposed pictures by not directing and instructing her boys.  Zelia, Jakob, Markus and Mathew are close knit, adventurous, friendly and each one a unique character.  Here’s some from their session:
